Accessibility Barrier Cards

Double-sided cards that let people experience an accessibility barrier first, then see how to fix it. No slides and no long reading. Just the barrier, the reveal and the conversation that follows.

Scanned a card? You are in the right place. The 16 physical cards are for table and workshop sessions. The full set of 30 online cards, including video, audio and keyboard barriers that paper cannot show, is available by subscription as a Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) resource for your own staff and student workshops in Moodle.

Why cards?

People learn accessibility by feeling it, not reading about it

Telling people that low contrast is a problem is one thing. Handing them a card where the text is barely visible, and watching them squint, is something else. That moment of effort is the lesson. The Brickfield Accessibility Barrier Cards are built on one idea: accessibility training works best when people experience the barrier themselves. When someone has to work to read justified text, or loses their place in a block of capital letters, they understand the barrier in a way no explanation can match.
The learning happens before anyone turns the card over, in the moment people realise they are experiencing the barrier themselves.
Each card is designed so the bad version feels bad. The fix is on the reverse, with a short explanation and the principle behind it. Turning the card over is the teaching moment. The online cards go further than paper can. They cover barriers you need a screen to feel, such as a video without captions, sound that starts on its own, or a page you cannot move through with a keyboard.
The design

Red side, green side: the reveal

Every card follows the same structure, on paper and on screen. The red side is the barrier. The green side is the fix. The red side shows the barrier, and it is genuinely hard to read or use. The green side shows the same content done properly, with a short note on why the barrier matters and who it affects. The ✕ and ✓ symbols mean the cards do not rely on colour alone, and a category label in the footer shows which area of accessibility the card covers. All sample content uses a library theme.
