Moodlemoot Canada 2025 - A Review

Montreal hosted the Moodlemoot Canada 2025 in May, over two days of the 14th and 15th.
Hundreds of attendees from across Canada, and some other countries, descended on Montreal to share their experiences using Moodle, enhancing Moodle and to learn from others – including Moodle HQ, about what they were doing and what was coming next.
The Moodlemoot Canada was hosted at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) and organised by the Catalyst IT Canada team.

The two days were a mix of keynoters and breakout rooms with two workshops, one by Moodle HQ on the upcoming marketplace, and one by AWS on Intelligent agents.
Brickfield Education Labs was a platinum sponsor and had a keynote on the first day. We also had a stand where we shared information on our Accessibility Toolkit, training, and our UX, Skills and Assessment bundles of plugins for Moodle.
Accessible Events
A key theme of the Moodlemoot, which fell on Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), was the use of PowerPoint Present Live functionality during presentations, with captions below the slides and the transcript slides shared on the mobile view, with individual translations. This helped support the multi-lingual event where some were speaking in French and some in English – allowing all to follow along. Apart from some minor hiccups, it was used for most of the sessions I saw.

After the welcomes, the Moot kicked off with Marie Achour Moodle HQ delivering the Moodle product vision – a glimpse into recent advancements in the delivery of Moodle’s product vision (EN/FR). This was a great updated insight into the current approach of Moodle, and reinforces optimism for the coming years of Moodle product development.
Matt Porritt, from Moodle HQ on Day 2, introduced Moodle 5.0 which again brings the usability of Moodle to a new level, with a continued improvement trajectory. Keep it up folks!
Other Presentations

One of the presentation which stood out and shows where AI is going to be providing support to teachers, and educators, was the presentation by Cyril Bedel of Edunao (new window).
Dixeo (New Window), is the strongest GenAI tool yet that I have seen for an LMS. It is a year since I saw the early version, and the workflows and user experience are huge jumps forward.
One product I love to keep tabs on is BigBlueButton (New Window). Between the Presentation from Fred, and insights he and his team provided us, it has been undergoing a significant user interface improvement – along with a better integration with Moodle – not that it needs one. BigBlueButton has arguably the best Virtual Classroom integration with Moodle for a while now.
Moodle Workplace featured in a number of presentations, from user experience and implementers – the product has also just released version 5.0. There are a lot of benefits hidden in there for corporations, government bodies and universities alike. I am surprised more universities have not yet started using it. I expect this to change in the coming years.
Accessibility Practice Framework

Our keynote focused on a simplified Accessible Practice Framework (APF). The Accessibility Tip Zine and Cube break entry level behaviours into six domains: Layout, Image, Text, Tables, Links and Media, with each of the six domains having three skills with one behaviour for each. We took the attendees through a breathless routine examining the APF bit by bit, and left them intently reflecting on their practice through a APF lens.
In conjunction with one of our partners, we launched our APF in May for educators to get their hands on to self-assess how they do rate against our APF. We have a site set up where you can self-register, see our Rate my Accessibility Practise button below. You then have a choice of English or Spanish courses to take our APF self-assessment, to gain an understanding of where you are in your journey, and get some personalised feedback and suggestions of where next to learn more. You can take our APF self-assessment repeatedly over time to track your progress.
Are you ready for a new look at our Accessible Practice Framework (APF)? Register on our Compass site and take the Self Assessment to get realtime feedback.
Thanks
A big shoutout to the amazing MoodleMoot Canada 2025 community! We had such valuable conversations, insights, and inspiration from all of you.
